Embracing Joy and Learning at the 2023 Curso de Verano Summer Camp

After three long years of COVID, our hearts and community spaces have reopened, filled with the light and joy of connection, particularly with the vibrant energy of our local youth. The 2023 annual “Curso de Verano” Los Barriles Kids Summer Camp was nothing short of exhilarating!

This past summer, 100 local Mexican children aged 6 to 12 embarked on a week-long journey of fun, education, and growth. After running the camp for three consecutive weeks in the hot July sun, our volunteers hearts were overflowing, the smiles and laughter of the kids makes all the hard work worthwhile.

A Community Effort

It’s important to recognize that none of this would be possible without our community’s support. From those who attended our season fundraising events, to those diligently recycling and volunteering, every effort contributes significantly to the camp’s success. It’s a testament to what we can achieve together.

Environmental Education Takes Center Stage

Our environmental education sessions are led by stellar marine biologists, making learning both engaging and authoritative. In the first week, children learned about turtles from the leaders of Baja’s Tortuguero de Las Californias.

The second week was dedicated to the octopus, a creature whose numbers have dwindled in the East Cape region, providing a poignant lesson in conservation from a renowned specialist and professor at the Universidad Autónoma BCS.

Using the successful turtle conservation model, we’re teaching the kids the importance of loving and protecting our marine friends – and understanding the impact of our dietary choices that allow wild sea animals to thrive.

Arts, Crafts, Swimming, and Snorkeling

Crafts at the camp are not only fun but also carry a message of marine conservation. The swimming sessions are essential, equipping children with the skills to snorkel the reefs of Buena Vista Bay, fostering a direct connection with the underwater world they’re learning to protect.

A special shout-out to our amazing volunteers – your dedication makes all of this possible. Your names and contributions resonate with every child’s laughter and every new swim stroke learned.

Call to Action: You Can Get Involved Too!

Volunteer at Our Summer Camp

If you find yourself in town this July/August, your time and skills could light up a child’s life. We’re on the lookout for art instructors, sports coaches, and swimming teachers.

Make a Donation

The camp operates on a budget exceeding $10,000 USD annually, and we rely on your generosity. Every donation, large or small, fuels this enriching experience for our children. Sponsor a child’s snorkel/mask/t-shirt/visor for only $40. Larger donations would be amazing too!
